Climate Change and the Amazon Forest: a close relationship

We are very proud to announce that Professor Paulo Artaxo, from the Center for Amazonian Sustainability, University of São Paulo, Brazil is the 2025 Bert Bolin Climate Lecturer.

About the lecture

Climate change is strongly impacting our planet and the Amazon ecosystem. The global increase in temperature is close to reaching 1.5 degrees Celsius, but in many continental areas, the temperatures have already increased by more than 2 degrees. Increased temperatures, reduced precipitation, and an increase in climate extremes are already causing significant changes in Amazonia. The forest stores 120 billion tons of carbon, and there is a risk that this large amount of carbon goes to the atmosphere, worsening global warming. The biological functioning of Amazonia is changing with the climate, impacting the global hydrological cycle. Prof. Artaxo will discuss how to deal with these critical aspects and build a sustainable society that could protect the ecosystems we depend on, and ourselves.
