Abstract: As Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems are being applied in diverse society sectors, various ethical frameworks have been created to make ethically responsible technology. However, such initiatives are usually vague, high-level, and directed toward those in development or decision-making, with low participation from citizens and other affected stakeholders. This thesis aims to bridge power asymmetries between AI practitioners and affected stakeholders. One of the ways to do so is through participatory design approaches, which are further explored in the thesis. The first study in the thesis aimed to understand how AI practitioners interpret and enact ethical principles in their day-to-day work to explore how ethical issues are tackled in work settings, specifically in the public sector. Following studies in the thesis will aim to identify methods to make AI practitioners engage with sensitivity towards affected stakeholders, inspired by care ethics, ethical sensitivity, and value-sensitive design approaches, to involve affected stakeholders in designing AI systems.
