Demography will be included in the Swedish statistics on research subjects
From 2025, demography will be included in the Swedish statistical standard for classifying research topics. This was decided by the Swedish Higher Education Authority (UKÄ) recently.
The standard was introduced in 2011 and UKÄ works continuously to revise it, due to the changing nature of research.
The latest update may make demography as a subject more visible nationally, believes Gunnar Andersson, professor of demography at Stockholm University.
”This revision may be appropriate given that the Swedish demographic research has a very strong position in international contexts”, says Gunnar Andersson.
Universities and colleges use the standard, among other things, to report doctoral students, staff and income from research and development by research topic.
The Department of Sociology is home to the Stockholm University Demography Unit (SUDA), an international group of scholars and doctoral students, working on many facets of population dynamics. It offers a Master’s program in Demography and a PhD program in Sociological Demography.
