This project builds on the research project Staging Migration, which creates new knowledge on the potential of children's theater to stage an inclusive Sweden. The results point to the ways that theater creates meeting places for psychosocial identification, social analysis, and critical reflection that contribute to civil repair.

A lot is known about the inequalities experienced by refugees, but much less is known about their children’s lives. This project will study the inequalities that are faced by the children and grandchildren of refugees living in Sweden.

The project will provide understanding of how the family decision to take leave is conditional on expectations of the gendered workplace. It may provide new insights into how policy-making may benefit from a shift from the individual and couple to the workplace.

The school in Sweden is supposed to be equal, but where children and young people live and which school they attend has become of decisive importance for their opportunities to reach the national knowledge requirements. Two schools that break this pattern piqued the researchers' curiosity.

This research program addresses long-term change in relation to ageing at the societal level as well as applying a life-course perspective on ageing as seen from the individual level.

In recent decades, European countries have seen substantial changes in family constellations. Using longitudinal data from five European countries, we examine whether the consequences of family constellations are constant for children and adults across European countries.

We know very little about the quality or impact of different programmes on mental health problems among children and young people. The research programme “Child Promotion/Preventions (ChiPP) for mental health outcomes – From policy to actions and their effects” will address this knowledge gap.

In our project we examine how changing economic circumstances may influence different demographic outcomes, using Longitudinal micro-level data for 1800-2007 for Sweden and Taiwan. A central question in demography is the degree to which marriage, fertility and mortality is influenced by economic cycles.

The article examines the development of publicly financed childcare (PFC) and cash for care in Finland, Norway, and Sweden, from the 1960s until today.

Understanding how the foreign-born population perceives and responds to further in-migration in the host country is essential for evaluating social cohesion. This project studies how migrants perceive, respond to, and are shaped by further migration.

Over the last 20 years, the divorce rate has doubled among women and men aged 60 and older in Sweden, in contrast to the flat trend in the rest of the adult population. The project is examining reasons to and consequences of late life divorces on living conditions.

This project applies a life course perspective to study socioeconomic inequalities in terms of unemployment and income poverty dynamics between second generation immigrants and ancestral Swedes.

How can strong emotions be part of everyday work practices? The project studies the challenges faced by priests, deacons, veterinarians, veterinary assistants, obstetricians, midwives, directors and actors in an increasingly heterogeneous and divided society.

Explaining COVID-19 mortality among immigrants in Sweden: A social determinants of health perspective

This research project explains the dramatic trends in European elections in the 21st century. The project’s primary hypothesis is that these trends result not from attitudinal changes amongst Europeans, but from variation in what they see as the most important political issues of the day–issue salience.

This project researches Nordic models of fatherhood and gender equality as hotbeds of welfare innovation and explores to what extent some countries are trying to ‘import’ similar models.

The project "Exposure to Swedish society and immigrant integration: The family formation of immigrants who arrive as children" brings together four researchers with extensive experience in studying the family formation of immigrants and their children.

Understanding parental leave and childhood education and care use and their consequences among migrants in Sweden

This project examine why fathers working in occupations requiring the highest qualifications, such as medical doctors and lawyers, claim more than twice the length of father leave than those in occupations requiring the least qualifications, such as cleaners and machine operators.

Since 2010, fertility rates in Sweden have been declining. This development is rather surprising since Swedish family policies are internationally acclaimed for facilitating childbearing and childrearing. The researchers in this project seek to identify the factors that drive these developments.

This project uses register-linked data of the new Swedish Generations and Gender Survey 2020 (GGS2020)and its predecessor, the GGS2012, to compare changes in fertility intentions of Swedish women and men over the recent decade of Swedish fertility decline.

Will the decrease in possibilities to get child maintenance support lead to an increase in parental conflicts and leading to economic issues becoming more dominant in custody issues?

This project examines the role of the family in the integration of refugees in Sweden.

The project’s aim is to use an intersectional approach to investigate the role of employer hiring discrimination in the reproduction of ethnic by gender segregation and inequality in the labor market.

The overarching goal of this project is to understand the combined influences of origin and destination contexts on immigrant childbearing.

This project explores the prevalence of intensive parenting norms in Sweden and their implications for childbearing, well-being and work trajectories, as well as differences in the nature of the norms across social and demographic groups.

To develop criminological theory on how penal power travels beyond the nation state, this project combines theory in sociology, international relations and international law to explore the overall research question ‘How do Scandinavian states engage in penal exports?’

Are older adults dependent on a good relationship for their health and well-being? What are the correlations between health and well-being, economic hardship and gender equality among older adults living in relationships in Sweden?

The worldwide migration today are at historical levels. Previous research has shown that migrants live longer than natives, but also that migrants have higher morbidity rates. In other words, they live longer, but with poorer health. This project will examine this paradox, focusing on the migrant populations of Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden.

Inequality in the length of life is the most fundamental of all inequality, but has been overlooked in the study of international migrants. For migrants, this represents a complex mix of their previous conditions in the origin country, the migration process, and current and often disadvantageous conditions in the host country.

Migrant Trajectories is a research programme that explores the life trajectories of migrants from their arrival in Sweden to the present, focusing on the five main life domains – geographical residence and housing, family formation, labour market participation, educational careers, and social security – and the interrelationships between them.

Residential segregation in combination with school choice polices has lead to increased school segregation, and this is no longer solely an urban phenomenon.

This project examines and discusses ways of improving current estimation methods using Swedish total population register data.

In this 3-year project, we advance research by focusing heterogeneity in career effects of parenthood, as we believe it can give us valuable clues to unveiling the underlying mechanisms of gender inequality.

Research shows that an increasing segregation has created a tangible inequality between different municipalities and individual schools. Where children and young people live and which school they attend has become of decisive importance for the possibility of reaching the knowledge requirements and continuing their studies.

Poverty has a clear impact on the mental health of children, but when and how it happens is still unknown. The project "Poverty and mental illness in the children of migrants – a longitudinal study of inequalities and key mechanisms" will fill in the knowledge gaps using unique data sources and innovative methods.

The purpose of this research project is to conduct a comparative study of radical right-wing parties in Europe.The general aim is to identify factors that explain why such parties have succeeded in some countries, while largely failing in others.

How does workplace and neighbourhood segregation shape the employment trajectories of refugees and their children?

Increased rates of immigration have led to rising concerns about integration in Europe. Social ties are often argued to promote integration by helping immigrants locate work and housing.

It is commonly perceived that migrants with higher professional qualifications integrate seamlessly into society. This interdisciplinary project aims to explore, with mixed methods, the knowledge gap on the topic of integration of high-skilled labor migrants.

The purpose of the project Staging Migration is to produce theoretical and empirical knowledge about the potential of children's theater to stage an inclusive Sweden, and to investigate whether and how social boundaries between ”us” and ”them” may be reproduced as an unintended consequence.

The Stockholm University SIMSAM Node for Demographic Research (SUNDEM) builds on the potential for top-class demographic research as provided by the individual, longitudinal, and spatial data available in Sweden’s population registers and the system of administrative registers that builds on the population registers.

The project analyzes how information about names contributes to our understanding of social mobility over three centuries (1750–2020). Our main purpose is to study whether the surnames capture aspects of social background beyond traditional class indicators such as occupation.

The consortium project “Tackling Inequalities in Time of Austerity” (TITA) provides a novel and comprehensive analysis of long-term trends in financial inequalities, inequalities in health and well-being and inequalities of opportunities over the life course, and their links to the moral and political climate in society.

How school systems respond to migration has an enormous impact on migrant integration. The project TEAMS - Teaching that matters: Understanding Levers of Integration in Scotland, Finland and Sweden addresses the urgent need to understand and help teachers meet the needs of migrant students.

This research project explores the important yet underexamined link between men's health and their ability to start and maintain a family.

Living conditions and life chances tend to run in families. Individuals’ health, attainment of education, and labor market careers largely depend on their parents. This project traces inequality back not only to parents, but grandparents, great grandparents and beyond by linking historical censuses from 1880 to 1950 to modern registers 1960s to 2020.

The Swedish Generations and Gender Survey (GGS) is part of an international data infrastructure, the Generations and Gender Programme (GGP). The infrastructure includes a register-linked survey of adults to which a contextual database covering their adult lives is matched.

During three years, the researchers in this project will examine how cause of death data is achieved, partly to generate new understanding about public health, but also to provide a better understanding of how physicians examine causes of death in Sweden and how they relate to and apply standards and guidelines.

The purpose of this project is to assess the unintended health consequences of Sweden’s parental leave policy, while addressing the interplay between parental leave use and health, both before and after childbearing.

Understanding changes in levels of occupational sex segregation in Sweden and Europe during half a century

The project "Understanding health inequalities experienced by self-identified sexual minorities, same-sex partners, and their children", aims to broaden the knowledge about health inequalities experienced among those who identify themselves as belonging to a sexual minority and their children, as well as among those living in a same-sex relationship.

The project "Who decides on a child's health care? An interdisciplinary study on the child's right to participation in decisions concerning care and treatment" explores how the interaction between children, custodians and health care staff affects children's right to participation, determination and integrity in their own health care.

The project "Why Do Working Class Voters Support the Populist Radical Right? A Mixed-Methods Study of a Changing Political Landscape in Sweden" explores the relationship between class politics and support for the populist radical right.

One aim of this project is to produce a Nordic overview of research and statistics on the socio-economic patterns and cultural aspects of parental leave take-up by young parents under 30 years of age. Another aim is to examine the consequences of these patterns for gender equality in the labour market and in family life.
