”The focus on large societal processes made me ready for various types of jobs”

Ana Tramosljanin liked the breadth of the Multidisciplinary Master's Programme in Demography at Stockholm University. She wanted to work with quantitative methods, which led her to the programme. Today, Ana is a doctoral student in human geography and studies housing segregation in Sweden.

“More specifically, I look at how changes in the rental sector, such as renovations and privatisations of public housing, affect segregation. I use quantitative methods and Swedish register data to explore this”, says Ana.

Ana began her academic path on a bachelor's program in political science and economics at Stockholm University. She appreciated the combination of understanding and analysing societal challenges using quantitative methods. This interest led her to the Multidisciplinary Master's Programme in Demography.

During her Master's studies, Ana was on a research internship at the Centre for Demographic Research at the Institute of Social Science in Belgrade, Serbia. When she came back, she worked as a research assistant at the Swedish Institute for Social Research (SOFI) and started warming up to the idea of doing a PhD herself.

At first, Ana wasn't sure if she wanted to continue to postgraduate studies. However, she knew that she was interested in working with quantitative methods, data management and data analysis. That’s why the Multidisciplinary Master’s Programme in Demography was a great fit.

“The focus on large societal processes and challenges such as fertility, mortality, and migration, made me ready for various types of jobs. At last, my interest in segregation led me to apply to a PhD position at the Department of Human Geography where I get to do exactly what I like – explore causes and consequences of segregation, using the excellent register data that Sweden is famous for”, says Ana.
