Higher seminar in Scandinavian Languages: Constructions of Leadership in Professional Talk-in-Interaction at Multilingual Workplaces. Azar Raoufi Masouleh, PhD student in Scandinavian Languages.
In this seminar I would like to present and discuss parts of the second article for my compilation PhD thesis. Analyzing video-recorded interactions from three multilingual workplaces in Sweden, this study employs Ethnomethodological Conversation Analysis (Garfinkel, 1967; Sacks, 1992) to examine collegial interactions in both pre-planned and spontaneous meetings. The focus is on the negotiation of epistemic statuses – specifically linguistic and institutional knowledge.
The discussion highlights ‘alignment and decision-making’ as well as ‘task accomplishment and response sessions’ among managers, team leaders, and workers, which are pivotal for planning and performing work-related tasks. Through a detailed examination of the participants’ orientations to multilingualism, the use of multimodal resources, and the interplay of action roles and physical artifacts, I want to demonstrate and discuss how these meetings facilitate planning and actively engage epistemic exchange. This, in turn, transforms participation frameworks and situates institutional identities.
The study addresses the concept of leadership as a collaborative construction, where epistemic statuses are dynamically negotiated and reshaped through interactions.
