About the department
Welcome to the Department of Swedish Language and Multilingualism!
At the department we do research on and teach the subjects Bilingualism, Scandinavian languages, Swedish, Swedish as a foreign language, Swedish as a second language, and Translation studies (interpreting and translation). We also give Tisus (Test in Swedish for university and college studies).
We do research on bilingualism and multilingualism and provide courses at basic level, advanced level and postgraduate level. Second language and bilingualism is one of Stockholm University's leading research areas.
Institute for Interpreting and Translation Studies (TÖI)
We do research on and teach about translation and interpretation in a multilingual society. We train interpreters and translators to meet Sweden’s needs, by direct commission from the government.
Swedish and Scandinavian Languages
We do research on and teach about Swedish in the past as well as in our time, and we also teach Danish and Norwegian.
Swedish as a Foreign Language
We provide language skills training courses in Swedish as a foreign language, for second language speakers, for international students and employees at SU. We also provide Tisus.
Tisus
Tisus is a test in Swedish for university studies regarding Swedish language proficiency. It is given twice a year in Sweden and abroad.

Department of Swedish Language and Multilingualism
On 21 June, we will launch a new Research site. Research will then be temporarily unavailableIt. The new Research site will have a layout, structure and functionality in line with the department's and Stockholm University's websites.
On 11–12/5 we will launch new websites for the Centre for Research on Bilingualism and the Institute for Interpreting and Translation Studies, TÖI. The new sites will have a layout, structure and functionality in line with the Department of Swedish Language and Multilingualism and the Stockholm University sites.
We had planned for campus teaching at our department in the spring semester of 2022, but under the current circumstances with the pandemic, we are switching to distance teaching on Zoom on a lot of courses to reduce crowding on campus. This is in accordance with the recommendations of the Swedish Public Health Agency and Stockholm University.
On Friday 19 November, the start page and entry page About the department on our website su.se/svefler will be replaced and have a layout, structure and functionality in line with the Stockholm University site.
