Group description

Geomorphology and Glaciology is one of our four research units at the Department.

By analyzing landscape elements, we can reconstruct environments and processes that previously worked in the landscape, and we have a special focus on areas that are or have been covered by glaciers and ice sheets. We also research ongoing processes, both on glaciers and in more applied research in tropical areas.

The methods we use are, for example, field collection of data, remote sensing, GIS analysis, dating of sediments and landforms, and numerical modeling. We conduct research in all icy areas of the earth, including Antarctica, the Arctic, North America, northern Europe and Asia, and the Central Asian highlands; but also in non-glacial environments, such as the Mediterranean and East Africa.

An important part of our research infrastructure is the Tarfala scientific station in northern Sweden, where we monitor glaciers and hydrology. The station also serves as a base for field teaching in Arctic and alpine environments.
