Research project Inclusive education and komvux, how does that work?

Swedish Municipal Adult Education, SMAE , is usually depicted as a second chance for adults in need of completing compulsory or upper secondary education. Going back to school as an adult can be a challenge in itself, and being in need of additional learning support can make the situation even more complex.
Moreover, different municipalities and schools have divergent approach to organizing, conducting, and financing SMAE-education, which can lead to variegated conditions for in(ex)clusion and result in inequalities, both in relation to learning conditions and to teachers’ working conditions. Specific focus of the thesis is on how inclusion is understood in policy, practiced by SMAE teachers, and experienced by SMAE students.

Three studies are conducted within the scope of the thesis. The first study looks at the ways inclusion has historically been understood in the curricula of SAME. The second study looks at the ways inclusion is conceptualized and enacted in teaching, while the third study investigates SMAE-students’ experiences of inclusive teaching and learning in SMAE.
