Research project Machine translation and viewer comprehension and experience
Machine translation and viewer comprehension and experience: a reception study of machine translated and post-edited interlingual subtitles’ effect on viewer comprehension and experience.
Over the past few years, machine translation and post-editing have been integrated into the subtitling workflow. The nature of these new subtitles differs from those translated by humans. My aim is to investigate how these subtitles affect viewers’ comprehension and experience of Anglophone TV series with Swedish subtitles by conducting reception studies.
This study can contribute valuable insights into viewers’ comprehension and experience of subtitled content and possibly determine whether these new subtitles adhere to the primary purpose of subtitling—making content comprehensible to viewers.
