Research project Supervision of student teachers and medical students in emotionally challenging situations

The project investigates how mentors, during workplace learning, better can contribute to students’ learning processes and their transition into work life.

During workplace learning, student teachers and medical students meet the complex activities in school or health care. In this environment, students have the opportunity to integrate theoretical and practical knowledge and develop a professional approach and a professional identity. The starting point for this research project is our previous studies of student teachers’ and medical students’ experiences of emotionally challenging situations during education. Students report on insufficient support, and mentors are rarely mentioned.

Our project aims to explore mentors’ perspectives and opportunities to contribute to students’ learning in these situations. The overall purpose is to understand how students’ professional development can be supported to better facilitate the transition into work life.
