Portuguese is the official language in ten countries in Africa, Asia, Europe South America and is spoken as a first language, second language, foreign language or heritage language in a multitude of contexts and regions around the world.

Portuguese is also the lexical base for several contact languages. Portuguese speaking communities are characterized, both historically and presently, by multilingualism, language contact and transculturality. This makes Portuguese particularly interesting to study from a sociolinguistic perspective. At Stockholm university, research within this field includes, but is not limited to, the following areas: linguistic variation and change in different socio-historical contexts, language and identity, language and dialect contact, multilingualism, endangered and minority languages, and language-in-education policies.
