Traineeship in Social-Ecological Resilience for Sustainable Development
This course gives you the opportunity to join a workplace in order to learn about a work environment and its activities, and to apply your past and recent experiences and insights from your studies within the Social-Ecological Resilience for Sustainable Development Master's programme.
Much of the work that relates to issues of sustainability and social-ecological resilience takes place within organisations of various kinds. Hence, by joining an organisation in doing a traineeship, the student will learn both about how issues of sustainability are addressed in practical work situations, and also how such work practices possibly could be changed and/or improved. The organisations can be of very different kinds, for example private companies, public agencies and authorities, non-governmental organisations, or educational- and research organisations.

Course structure
The students first task is to find an organisation that is willing to take on as traineeship. Oftentimes suggestions for different type of traineeship are provided through the course leader and/or others through Athena, but it is ultimately the responsibility of the student to find a suitable traineeship.
When a traineeship agreement has been established with an organisation, a brief work plan needs to be written and then approved by the course leader. Then, when the traineeship starts, the student will be working with the organisation that provided the traineeship in ways that are found mutually agreeable.
Teaching format
No teaching will be conducted at the University, i.e. the course is entirely focused on the traineeship and its associated activities. The traineeship will, however, be finalised by the student submitting a traineeship report, including a diary of every workday’s activities along with personal reflections. The experiences from the traineeship will also be presented in class, and feedback in the form of other students’ (and the course leader’s) reflections of the traineeship will then be provided.
Requirements
The organisation needs to represent a workplace in a broad sense, i.e. it constitute the work environment which members of the organisation attend on a regular basis in order to carry out professional work together. The course leader can be consulted if there are unclarities whether if an organisation fulfils this criterion.
Further, the work should be conducted in a physical work environment. If the organisation is conducting its work remotely, or if it is not feasible to work at the physical premises of the organisation, the student could do the work while being at the premises of Stockholm Resilience Centre (i.e., working at home is not allowed unless there are special circumstances that needs to be discussed and approved by the course leader a priori).
The work needs to relate to issues of social-ecological resilience and sustainability in a broad sense.
More information about the course and requirements can be found on Athena.
Assessment
The course is examined through three compulsory items: (1) a workplan to be submitted no later than two weeks prior to the start of the course, (2) a traineeship report including a diary, and (3) a (verbal) presentation about experiences and reflections gained through the traineeship. All these items need to be approved by the course leader.
The grade will either be Pass or Fail.
Examiner
Course examinator (and leader) is Örjan Bodin, orjan.bodin@su.se
