Extraction and consumption of natural resources in a global historical perspective
The environmental issue is currently one of our largest societal challenges. This course examines the historical roots for our time’s multiple environmental crises.
This course will be given in English.
The focus of the course is on the industrial extraction and consumption of natural resources and its effects on society and environment. Water, forests, fossil fuels and minerals are analyzed locally and globally in relation to the consolidation of modern states, the global expansion of capitalism and the shaping role of nature in these processes. The course thus offers a deepened understanding of one of environmental history’s most central areas and its methodological approaches, using a “more than human” historical perspective as a point of departure.
