Master's Programme in Language Science

The Master’s Programme offers a comprehensive two-year course of study with a specialisation in one of twenty different areas of inquiry. The programme aims at extending and deepening students’ knowledge within the chosen field of study, while strengthening the interdisciplinary knowledge of theory, research ethics and research methodologies.

• Programme overview

  The programme comprises four semesters of full-time study and consists of both mandatory courses and elective courses.

  Compulsory courses and optional courses

  The courses in the Master’s Programme fall within three categories:

  • Courses mandatory to the programme. These courses are mandatory to all students in the programme and the instruction language is always English.
  • Courses mandatory to the specialisations (60–75 credits). These courses are offered by the department hosting the specialisation. Courses in the international specialisations have English as language of instruction. Courses mandatory to the specialisation are specified in the programme overview of the specialisation.
  • Elective courses (15–30 credits). These courses can be freely selected from the range of courses at Stockholm University. However, the choice of courses must always be anchored with the home department.

  Application for courses

  Students within the programme apply for courses by logging in as students at antagning.se antagning.se (universityadmissions.se). This applies to all courses within the programme.

  Application deadline

  The application deadline for the courses in spring is in the middle of October. The application deadline for the courses in autumn is in the middle of April.

   

  Career opportunities

  In addition to knowledge about linguistic theory and methodology, studies in Languages and Linguistics will help you develop skills such as critical and analytical thinking and problem-solving. Students often combine their studies in Linguistics with studies in Modern Languages, Philosophy, Pedagogy, or Computer Science.

  Thus, studies in Languages and Linguistics can lead to a wide range of professions, from academic research and teaching to working in the tech industry. Linguistic studies are advantageous in areas such as language teaching, editorial work, translation, development of digital teaching materials, and speech and language technology.
