Voices of the Nobility: Polish Early Modern Political Discourse in the Skokloster Castle Library
This project investigates the political discourse of the nobility in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth through an exceptional, hitherto unknown seventeenth-century manuscript preserved in the Skokloster Castle Library. The 672-page folio volume contains 184 political texts, including instructions issued by local assemblies, senatorial speeches, parliamentary records, diplomatic correspondence, and reports on contemporary events from the period 1609–1616. Unlike elite printed political treatises, these texts reflect the material that actually circulated among the politically engaged nobility, offering unparalleled insight into their arguments, priorities, and value systems. Through conceptual and rhetorical analyses, the study examines how notions such as liberty, equality, fraternity, concord, virtue, law, love of the homeland, and the Commonwealth shaped political discourse during the time that Polish historiography commonly refers to as the era of “noble democracy.”
