Reimagining Home in Central Europe: Displacement, History, and Postmemory in Three Polish Contemporary Narratives
This study examines the concept of home in contemporary Polish literature within the Central European context, focusing on Olga Tokarczuk’s Dom dzienny, Dom nocny [House of Day, House of Night] (1998), Wiesław Myśliwski’s Traktat o łuskaniu fasoli [Treatise on Shelling Beans] (2006) and Szczepan Twardoch’s Drach (2014). In these texts, home emerges not only as a material dwelling but also as a symbolic and cultural space shaped by memory, displacement, and historical upheaval. Tokarczuk’s fragmentary novel situates home within a palimpsest of layered stories in the borderland of Nowa Ruda, while Twardoch explores fractured Silesian identities across generations marked by war and shifting allegiances. Myśliwski reflects on personal loss, with the destruction of the narrator’s family house becoming a central metaphor for war’s erasures. By bringing these works into dialogue, the study investigates how Polish writers reimagine home in Central Europe’s complex historical landscape, negotiating between individual memory and the region’s layered past.

Professor Sanna Witt: At the Intersection of World and Soviet Literature: The Case of Aleksandr Deich

It could be argued that any discussion of “world literature”, theoretical or empirical, needs to start with the issue of translation, the often neglected prerequisite for the phenomenon as such. If we are to situate Russian and Soviet literature within the world literature paradigm it is therefore important to focus on the agents of translation (Milton & Bandia 2009), and the networks created by them. Following the trajectory of Aleksandr/Oleksandr Deich (1893–1972) – Russian-Ukrainian-Jewish translator, writer, scholar, editor, literary critic, pedagogue and networker par excellence – this paper explores what biographical optics may contribute to our understanding of the issue of translation and world literature in the Soviet context.
