Tema från den teoretiska filosofins historia
Kursen behandlar ett filosofiskt tema i den teoretiska filosofins historia, såsom exempelvis stoisk logik, skepticism under senmedeltid, kunskapsteori under 1600–1700-tal, eller idealistisk filosofi under 1800-talet.
Temat studeras i sitt historiska sammanhang. Stor vikt läggs vid att artikulera det behandlade temat avseende problemställningar, teorier, begrepp och argument. Särskild vikt läggs vid att kritiskt analysera särdragen i det behandlade temat. Det övergripande målet är att fördjupa förståelsen av den historiska bakgrunden till motsvarande tema i samtida teoretisk filosofi.
Registrering
I god tid före kursstart skickas mail ut till alla antagna studenter, med information och instruktioner. Antagna studenter förväntas registrera sig själva (webregistrering).

Renaissance philosophy
Kursbeskrivning:
This course aims at giving an overview of the intellectual life that thrived between 1400 and 1600. Usually ascribed to what is commonly called “Renaissance Philosophy”, the thinkers of this period undertook a critical assessment of Ancient Philosophy (particularly of Aristotelianism and Platonism), examined language and logic in order to polish reason and attain plausible knowledge, and emphasized the care of every one’s conscious soul (the mind) as a means to build harmonious societies and produce enlightened rulers. However, the critical assessment of past and present issues also led to increasing divergences and opposed interpretations of philosophical, political, and religious matters. It should also be mentioned that the invention of print during this period was decisive to digest the classical tradition through a variety of reference books, which fostered the dissemination of both Latin and Greek philosophers.
Each lesson of this course will be divided into two parts: the first hour will be more explanatory and lecture-driven, while the second hour will be devoted to the reading and the commentary of chosen passages from selected authors in English translations. Students are most welcome to participate actively during both parts.

3. Plato’s works and thought in Latin | Marsilio Ficino (1433-1499).
4. The reassessment of language and logic: Lorenzo Valla (c.1406-1457), Rudolph Agricola (1444-1485).
5. Giovanni Pico della Mirandola (1463-1494).
6. Dictionaries, encyclopedias, and source books: Ambrogio Calepino (ca. 1440-1510), Gregor Reisch (1467/70-1525), Conrad Gessner (1516-1565).
7. Erasmus of Rotterdam (1466/9-1536).
8. Joan Lluís Vives (1492/3-1540).
9. Religious, political, and moral disorder: the search for a harmonious society | Niccolò Machiavelli (1469-1527), Thomas More (1478-1535), Martin Luther (1483-1546).
10. Skepticism and the coming of Modernity | Michel de Montaigne (1533-1592), Francisco Sanches (1551-1623).
Bibliography
The specific readings for each lesson (including the anthology of passages for each Renaissance author) will amount to, approximately, 30-40 pages; they will be announced later in May, and they will be available in due time through the online learning environment Athena.
