"I was thrilled to learn that I had secured a spot at the University of Southern Maine (USM) through the north2north Network. The university offered a wide range of courses relevant to my interests, and it took me hours to prioritize what I wanted to study because there were so many fascinating options. With support from USM, I went through several rounds of applications to finalize my schedule and was delighted to blend artistic courses with my core curriculum in behavioral science.

At USM, I took some of the most exciting courses in behavioral science to date. I found that the American approach was quite different from my home university, focusing heavily on "hands-on" learning, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The instructors were incredibly skilled, with diverse backgrounds and roles as professors and institutional leaders when not teaching at the university. A course on trauma was the highlight of my academic experience.

I lived in Portland, where there was an impressive amount of cultural exploration available for a city of its size. The environment was calm, safe, and inclusive. I stayed on campus, which was a wonderful experience. The housing was new, comfortable, and centrally located in Portland. I also attended classes on a campus in a nearby city, with a bus that ran conveniently right outside the door. The commute was easy and gave me more opportunities to explore the surrounding area, as the ride to campus was about 45 minutes.

For future students, my biggest advice is: apply! This is truly a life-changing experience, and having the opportunity to explore another culture and live in a new city while continuing your education is an opportunity not to be missed. I’ve traveled extensively, but this has been my best experience so far. Living an everyday life far from home, with everything ready for you to step into, offers a safe and enriching way for any student to explore the world and broaden their academic perspective."
