Michiel van Elk
Eneroth lecture #3 will take place on 10 December, 14:00–15:30 in Lecture Hall 4, Albano.
Contact: Professor Pehr Granqvist, holder of the Eneroth Professorship.
Psychedelic substances, including LSD and psilocybin, can induce profound altered states of consciousness and are increasingly being used for therapeutic purposes. However, next to a wave of enthusiasm about their therapeutic potential, in our society we also witness increased concerns about their safety and efficacy.
In this talk I will first look back and provide re-evaluation of the early controlled trials on psychedelic therapy from the 1960s and 70s and discuss the lessons learned.
Next I will take stock of current psychedelic science and reflect on the current state-of-the-art regarding efficacy, mechanisms of action and how to address common methodological problems.
I will conclude by discussing the prospects for psychedelic therapy, with a call for combining idealism with pragmatism in rethinking psychedelic science.
