Abstract
Nonverbal vocalisations like laughs and moans are fundamental building blocks of the human behavioural repertoire, yet they have only recently become objects of systematic empirical investigation.
In this talk, I’ll present evidence from my research program on nonverbal vocalisations, drawing on studies of vocalisations in congenitally deaf individuals, across different cultures, and in non-human primates. Together, these findings suggest that some nonverbal vocalisations constitute discrete, innate expressions of emotion. I will end by introducing computational ethology, a new methodological approach that provides opportunities for the study of vocalisations and other behaviours as they occur in everyday life.
