It is our great pleasure to welcome Dr. Sammyh Khan from Örebro University (Sweden) to talk about his recent work on skin colorism in India. Dr. Khan’s research deals with issues such as prejudice, stereotypes, and discrimination. Anyone who is interested in learning more about these issues is welcome.
Abstract
Following a call for a psychological approach to discrimination based on skin colour in Asia (Bettache, 2020), this talk addresses skin colourism in the Indian context. While numerous journalistic and scholarly accounts have highlighted the ubiquity of skin colourism in contemporary Indian society, the phenomenon has received little theoretical and empirical attention from the field of psychology.
The presentation opens with a historical and sociocultural account of skin colourism in India, highlighting its colonial antecedents and contemporary manifestations. This is followed by findings from a nationally representative survey examining the prevalence of skin colourism in India and its implications for wellbeing. The talk concludes with reflections on the role that the field can play in disentangling colonial underpinnings of sociocultural and psychological processes that perpetuate social injustices in contemporary Indian society.
