Master of Laws (LL.M.) (60 credits) in European Economic Law
Our one-year LL.M. in European Economic Law (EEL) is an internationally renowned programme which over the course of its 30 years of existence has developed a distinctive profile with a blend of competition law, financial law and social law.
The European Union of today is the result of a bold and remarkably successful project of economic and political integration. The law of the European Union permeates ever growing areas of social and economic activity in the EU Member States and directly affects economic operators as well as ordinary citizens. In-depth knowledge and understanding of the legal system and the functioning of the Union are therefore major assets for any law student who wants to develop professionally in the European Union. Even for lawyers working outside the borders of the Union, advanced knowledge of EU law can open exciting career opportunities and give an invaluable competitive advantage.
The principal object of study in the LL.M. in European Economic Law is the legal system of the European Union, approached from an Internal Market perspective. Apart from advanced level knowledge in substantive European economic law, the programme gives students a theoretical and methodological foundation for further independent research, development and other qualified work within this area of law. The programme offers a unique opportunity to advance your career in a dynamic and highly relevant area of law.
The courses are taught by leading professors and researchers at Stockholm University, by internationally renowned guest professors, judges and advocate generals from the European Court of Justice, as well as leading Swedish practitioners.
The programme is a full-time course of study and requires active participation.

Programme overview
The programme consists of four courses of 15 credits: three of the courses are compulsory and one is an elective specialisation course. The general structure of the programme is as follows :
Autum Semester
- Mandatory course Advanced Economic Law, 15 credits.
- Elective course The Internal Market – Digital and Social Challenges, 15 credits, or
- Elective course EU Competition Law, 15 credits.
Spring semester
- Mandatory course Legal Methods in Research and Practice, 15 credits.
- Mandatory course Master Thesis in European Economic Law, 15 credits.
The programme opens with a mandatory course in Advanced European Economic Law (15 ECTS), devoted to issues of constitutional and methodological character. The course aims at developing students’ ability to work with EU law sources and interpretative methods in order to analyse complex problems of European economic law.
This course is followed by an elective specialisation course (15 ECTS), where students are given the opportunity to broaden their knowledge and deepen their understanding of a selected area of European economic law. Compared to the introductory course, the elective courses offer specialisation and deepening of students' knowledge in both substantive and methodological regard.
During the second term students take a course in Legal Methods in Research and Practice, where they develop skills in applying European legal methods through participating in a EU Moot Court and through interactive seminars and research workshops.
The programme concludes with a master thesis on a selected topic of EEL.

Our objective is to enhance your ability to analyse, solve problems and think independently; qualities that are required in advanced international careers. To achieve this objective, we employ a rich variety of teaching methods, in which active student participation is the key.

How to apply
Note that there is only one application round every year. The application period opens in mid-October with a deadline in mid-January for commencement the following autumn. Our LL.M. only starts in the autumn.

Entry requirements
In order to be eligible for our LL.M., you have to fulfil the following entry requirements for master studies in Sweden:
- You must have been awarded an undergraduate degree in law from an internationally recognised university or hold an equivalent degree with a minimum of 180 ECTS in law. Applicants on the last year of such a degree can also apply.
- Support your proficiency in English, equivalent to level English 6 in the Swedish secondary school system.
Required supporting documentation
In order to prove your eligibility, you must provide University Admissions with documents supporting your previous study information and your English proficiency.
Which documents are needed and their format (including translation requirements) is decided by University Admissions Sweden. Therefore, you must comply with the guidelines stated here: Provide application documents.
In addition, applicants must also submit the following documents in English to fulfil the selection criteria:
- a personal statement (please use the following template:

- two letters of recommendation, max. one A4-page each (e.g. from academics, employers, internships providers etc). Make sure they are duly signed and include contact information and preferably these should be written on paper with an official letter head
- a CV (max two A4-pages)
Incomplete applications, i.e. where one or several documents mentioned above are missing, will be assessed accordingly.
Selection process
Eligible applicants are selected on the basis of a weighted assessment of grades from earlier legal studies, relevant extra-curricular/professional experiences, one personal statement and two letters of recommendation. Typically, grades from legal studies and extra-curricular/professional experiences carry most weight. If applicants have similar academic qualifications, the statement of purpose will be of key importance. Strong letters of recommendations can also become decisive on occasion.
