Research group IT Management and Governance
All over the world, organizations are looking to perform better and gain competitive advantage by using IT and digital technologies. The IT Management and Governance group studies how to manage and govern IT and digital investments to support digital transformation.
IT management and governance areas are considered important research areas not only by different scholars but also by IT and business practitioners. This is mainly due to the interest of organizations in improving their business performance and achieving competitive advantage through the use of IT and digital technologies, in generating business value from IT and digital investments and in supporting digital transformation in their organizations.
IT Management and Governance is performing research in these important areas. The research group is involved in the Swedish Research School of Management and IT (MIT) that is co-funding different research projects in IT management and governance areas.

The group has also received funds for research projects from Sweden's Government Agency for Development Cooperation (Sida), Swedish Foundation for International Cooperation in Research and Higher Education (STINT) and IBM Global University Program Academic Award. It has developed a research collaboration with researchers in IT management and governance areas from industry and universities in Sweden and abroad.
Group description
The research performed by the IT Management and Governance group is done mainly on business–IT alignment, IT governance, IT outsourcing and digital transformation. Examples of research done in IT management and governance are presented below.
Business–IT Alignment. This is still a top management concern and there are many challenges that remain to be researched. Some challenges on which our research has focused, and which has not been explored sufficiently, is the influence of formal and informal organizational structure on business-IT alignment maturity, as well the IT alignment related factors in digital transformation success.
IT Governance. A few research studies have been done till now to study the role of organizational culture and structure in IT governance. In this direction our research has focused to study the influence of different organizational culture types on IT governance performance outcomes in different organizations; and by specifying IT organizational structure relationship with IT governance performance outcomes and IT governance implementation.
IT Outsourcing. The decision process for organizations – and especially for large organizations – to outsource IT or not is a substantial challenge. In this direction our research has looked to the development of a method that can be used for assessing the risk exposure in support of IT outsourcing decisions. We have also studied the main factors in IT outsourcing relationships and the success factors in IT outsourcing in large companies.
Digital Transformation. IT plays a key role in digital successful companies, and in the next years an increase in the investments related to digital transformation is expected. Digital technologies are becoming very important in creating value for organizations. Therefore, to succeed in digital transformation, organizations will need to deploy organizational strategies that create value through the leverage of digital technologies. There is also a need for IT governance structures, processes and relational mechanisms that support digital initiatives. One of the research topics in this area has the aim to study IT governance mechanisms that are critical for achieving success in digital transformation.
