Research group Transcultural Literary Studies

Transcultural Literary Studies is a vibrant field that brings together several researchers in the Department of Romance Studies and Classics. Our research group focuses on a broad range of issues related to the translation, circulation and reception of literature, and also examines literary multilingualism in all its forms.

Our work is concerned with different kinds of literary and cultural mediation – such as translation, self-translation, and re-translation –, and also considers sociological aspects of literary circulation, including how literature is selected, packaged, read and introduced in new cultural contexts. We are interested in how various cultural actors, through their agency and practices, facilitate (or impede) the transfer of literary texts across cultural, national and linguistic borders. Another important and growing area concerns literary multilingualism, including the study of multilingual authors, multilingual texts, and diasporic literatures which challenge traditional notions of monolingual national literatures.

Group description

The members of our group are active within various national and international networks and projects. A number of conferences, symposia, guest lectures and master’s and doctoral courses have been organized over the years.
