Foster children as midlife adults: For whom and under what circumstances may placement in foster care counteract social and health-related adversity across the life course?

Each year, around 1 percent of European children are placed in out-of-home care (OHC ). In Sweden, the risk of placement is greatest during the teenage years. However, a significant proportion of all children are placed in OHC as infants (<12 months).

The concept of matching refers to the process when a foster home is selected to fit an individual child in placement. Matching is important for the quality of care, as the foster carers need necessary resources to meet the child’s needs.

Two thousand children and youth in eight municipalities will be subject to a prospective, longitudinal study of their trajectory through the child welfare system for six years. The study is conducted by an interdisciplinary research team with academic competence in social work, sociology, law and criminology, collaborating with FoU-Nordväst.

An exploration of youth's experiences

The research program is an interdisciplinary collaboration between the Department of Criminology (Stockholm University), the Department of Social Work (Stockholm University), and the Social Affairs Administration of the city of Stockholm. The research will span over six years, starting in the fall of 2024.

The project follows "Soc för unga" which aims to make social services more known and accessible to children and young people. Specifically, the project focuses on the part of this work where social services, schools and young people together have developed a material for teaching about social services in schools.

Despite a strong emphasis on person-centered care in social service provision, scientific knowledge is limited regarding the actual impact and how these goals can be realized.

Education is an important basis for children's development and is usually described as a way out of vulnerability.
