Title: Creating music: the ‘music producer’ in general music education in Sweden

The first part of the seminar Mikael Persson and Jonas Asplund will present a work in progress from a practice-based research project with music teachers with the title: Creating music – the ‘music producer’ in general music education in Sweden. Music, as an art-form, is assumed to be about communication and expressing yourself, and is thus closely related to creativity and to create music. To better understand under what circumstances the space for creativity is present this project have, using positioning theory and discursive psychology, studied what rhetorical resources are being used to accomplish a position as a ‘music producer’ in two different music educational settings. The results the article discusses four different resources at play: Expressiveness, Inspiration, Playfulness and Musical Proficiency. For this part of the presentation, there will be a very short introduction and some empirical exampled presented, but the main part will be discussions regarding the draft of an article in progress attached to the mail.

10.50 – 12.00 Ulrika Bennerstedt and Björn Sjöblom, Swedish Defence University

Title: Instructor interventions in military wargaming: instruction-in-interaction in naval officer education

In the second part Ulrika Bennerstedt and Björn Sjöblom will present their work on “instructor interventions in military wargaming – instruction-in-interaction in naval officer education. For more detail, see the description of their presentation below:

In this seminar, we present ongoing analyses of video data from digital, map-based naval wargames in officer education at the Swedish Defence University. Drawing on ethnomethodology and conversation analysis (EMCA), we explore how instructors intervene in cadets’ tactical play, and how such interventions become recognizable and consequential in interaction. We focus in particular on how questions, prompts for reflection, and corrective moves are accomplished through talk, embodied resources, and the use of shared displays. The study is at a work-in-progress stage, where we seek to discuss both preliminary findings and analytical choices: how to conceptualize instructional interventions as situated pedagogical actions, and how this perspective might contribute to the broader field of learning in interaction, but also simulation and game-based learning. We therefore warmly invite comments and reflections on methodology, conceptual framing, and possible pedagogical implications.

About Research Forum for Interaction and Learning (ReFIL)

The Research Forum for Interaction and Learning (ReFIL) provides a methodological forum for researchers working with interactional data; primarily audio- and video recordings of interactions and activities in educational, workplace and everyday settings.

The ReFIL Seminar focuses on issues concerning analyses of interaction, primarily relevant to the field of Education. At the seminars, we discuss participants’ work in progress or published studies, and engage in collaborative analysis of data from ongoing projects. We also read and discuss selected relevant publications in the field. The seminar provides a platform for developing analytic skills, as well as for advancing theory, methodology, and analytic approaches to interactional data.
