Project description

Subject: Physics

The Trapped Ion Quantum Technology Group at Stockholm University invites applications for a highly motivated PhD student to join our pioneering research in quantum simulations with trapped Rydberg ions. The aim of the PhD project is to develop a quantum simulator for modeling molecular dynamics using our trapped Rydberg ion technology. This position is part of the ERC Synergy project "Open 2D Quantum Simulator (OPEN-2QS)", which start on 1 May 2025.

The OPEN-2QS project aims at developing a quantum simulator for open system quantum dynamics using trapped ions excited to Rydberg states. This novel approach features fast interactions combined with long-term stability. This will enable the simulation and study of phenomena such as novel states of matter like quantum glasses, molecular dynamics and quantum thermodynamics.

The PhD project is primarily experimental and will be carried out within the Trapped Ion Quantum Technology Group at Stockholm University. It will involve close collaboration with experimentalists and theoreticians at the Universities of Mainz and Tübingen.

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a strong interest in quantum physics, in particular quantum simulations, and a willingness to engage in both hands-on experimental work and theoretical discussions.

The Trapped Ion Quantum Technology group at Stockholm University focuses on pushing the frontiers of quantum technology through innovative research in trapped ion systems. For more information about our group and current projects, please visit https://qtech.fysik.su.se/.
