About the centre

The Centre for maritime studies aims to strengthen the field of maritime research. Within the Centre, historians, archaeologists and ethnologists conduct interdisciplinary research.

The Centre for Maritime Studies was established in 2010 with the purpose of providing a maritime research- and educational environment of internationally high standards. The Centre is run as a close collaboration between Stockholm University and the Swedish National Maritime and Transport Museums, which shows among other things in joint work on exhibitions, public events and research collaborations.

The Maritime Seminars

The Maritime Seminars are organized by CEMAS and SMTM. The seminars are a space for presenting ongoing research, research ideas, chapters from books, and more within the maritime field.

The time is normally on Fridays 13-14.

The seminars usually take place at the Vasa museum in Stockholm, however occasionally can be placed at the Naval museum in Karlskrona or at Stockholm University. Please check the newsletter or the calendar event for each seminar for updated information.

Education

At present, CEMAS gives one course on the maritime history of Sweden. Read about it here: Svensk historia från sjösidan. The course is in Swedish.

Thesis supervisors

Interested in maritime perspectives? There is plenty of opportunity to write a thesis on subjects related to the sea. The Centre for Maritime Studies can help with maritime subject suggestions and are, if time and resources allow, able to supervise students of history and ethnology. CEMAS is run by a board who make decisions about the aims and activities of the Centre, which are executed by the Research Leader with administrative assistance from the Centre Secretary.

The current Research Leader for CEMAS is Professor Leos Müller.
