The higher seminar in Theatre Studies: on Euripides with stage director Elli Papakonstantinou

Seminar

Date: Thursday 9 December 2021

Time: 13.00 – 15.00

Location: The Library at the Department of Culture and Aesthetics

A conversation with Greek theatre director Elli Papakonstantinou about her stage adaptation of Euripides’ tragedy Alcestis, currently performed at Dramaten.

Papakonstantinou’s productions are known for their formal explorations that involve multimedia, music and philosophical questions, often with a connection to the ancient Greek classics. In her feminist rewriting of Euripides’ play, she has wanted to give Alcestis, who sacrifices her life for her husband, her long-awaited restoration.

The conversation will revolve around questions of adaptation, critical rewriting, the significance of mythical tales, and the meanings of Euripides’ play and its resonances today.

Chair: Magnus Tessing Schneider.
