Benedetta gives lectures at the House of Science

The House of Science in Stockholm invited several PhD students working in different fields to give lectures to high school students during the autumn semester. Benedetta, a PhD student in the Department of Mathematics at Stockholm University, was one of them. She has given seven lectures so far, and two remain. Around ten students have attended Benedetta’s lectures so far.
– When they asked me if I wanted to contribute, I tried to create a course that’s not too high-level but at the same time could introduce topics that the students haven’t learned anywhere else, says Benedetta. She adds that she also wanted to give the students an idea of what studying math at a university is like.
She has constructed different types of objects and shown how the properties of these objects can help prove various statements. The main goal of the course was to provide a proof, using algebraic topology (an area of mathematics), of the existence, at all times, of two opposite points on Earth that have the same temperature and pressure.
– Knowledge of math in general can be used for lots of things — it’s about how to process ideas in an abstract way. Above all, I want to open their minds to new ways of thinking, says Benedetta.
