Title: Simulation of turbulence in atmospheric boundary layers: what should an LES solver be able to do?

Abstract

We are developing a Large Eddy Simulation (LES) solver to be used for simulations of turbulent flows in the planetary boundary layer (PBL). When a new model is developed it must be tested on canonical cases to verify model performance. In this seminar I will give an introduction to the theory behind LES and discuss methods for evaluating the performance of an LES solver. I will review three studies that test LES performance in three different cases: a neutral PBL, a convective PBL, and a stably stratified PBL (Jiang et al. 2018; Sullivan and Patton 2011; Sullivan et al. 2016).
