Research subject Teaching and Learning in Social Sciences

Teaching and Learning in Social Sciences are based on social science subjects such as social studies, geography, economic subjects and psychology. In a broad sense, the interest is focused on what the subjects are in relation to what they could or should be in school, society, higher education and professional training.

Central issues that are studied are the relationship between theory-practice, teaching-learning and subject and social critical perspectives on teaching, not least in critically examining how selective choices and subject traditions are formed and maintained in school.

Social studies education is interested in questions about teaching and learning in the school subject of social studies and its connection to the school's task of educating citizens.

Geography education has a particular focus on interdisciplinary understandings of the relationship between man and nature and how teaching develops such an understanding – it´s important in relation to sustainable development and climate change.

Psychology education is interested in questions related to teaching and learning in the school subject of psychology, among other things with a focus on the subject's role in relation to the school's mission to educate citizens.

Within the didactics of the social science subjects, research is also conducted in economics in higher education and in schools, such as economics in the social studies subject.

The researchers within the Teaching and Learning in Social Sciences subjects use a range of different theoretical inputs which are related in different ways to methodological approaches such as approaches such as interviews, classroom observations, surveys, text analysis as well as modeling and design of teaching. The research often takes place in collaboration with municipalities and schools, among other things in the form of practical and teaching-developing research projects in close collaboration with teachers.
