A lot is known about the inequalities experienced by refugees, but much less is known about their children’s lives. This project will study the inequalities that are faced by the children and grandchildren of refugees living in Sweden.

The overarching aim of the project is to further knowledge about the role of the welfare state for climate policy attitudes. Are people more willing to accept decarbonization policies if they are compensated by a generous welfare state?

Why are educational inequalities by gender and immigrant background not those we would expect given students’ aspirations, confidence, and stress?

This project applies a life course perspective to study socioeconomic inequalities in terms of unemployment and income poverty dynamics between second generation immigrants and ancestral Swedes.

Encouraging Fathers’ Care: Causes and Consequences of Fathers’ Parental Leave Provisions in Cross-National Comparative Perspective

In this project, we functioned as the Swedish National team providing input to EUROMOD. EUROMOD is a European tax-benefit simulation model. The input we provided pertained to policy knowledge, preparation of micro-data and programming of the Swedish tax-benefit system.

How have policies influenced changes in everyday life one year after the coronavirus outbreak? Cross-national analysis of parents’ experiences with employment, work and care

The project’s aim is to use an intersectional approach to investigate the role of employer hiring discrimination in the reproduction of ethnic by gender segregation and inequality in the labor market.

Based on analyses of large-scale Swedish register data this project sheds light on mechanisms of economic inequality; what the drivers are of economic inequality, what role class plays net of skills, how that change across cohorts, and how advantages and disadvantages accumulate across life for women and men.

Can self-employment increase upward mobility? The main objective of this project is to study income mobility among natives and immigrants and we ask specifically if self-employment can increase upward mobility.

This project aims to describe and understand the fundamentals of integration of youth, and its variation across five countries (Norway, Sweden, England, Germany and the Netherlands). We use the large-scale CILS4EU/CILS-NOR data on young people of immigrant and majority origins.

The starting point of this project is that research on intergenerational socioeconomic persistence needs to resolutely shift the perspective away from ‘normative’ careers of ‘typical’ men to the actual Swedish population. We aim to broaden the perspective and redevelop concepts and theories to fit the experience of the entire population.

This program emphasizes the multidimensional character of inequality. We integrate the analysis of several central welfare dimensions and study how they cross-cut each other and co-evolve. Our approach is dynamic, following the development of e.g., economic resources, education, health and well-being across individual lives and generations.

We address three questions: (1) Does the RUT reform contribute to increase employment among immigrants? (2) Does the RUT industry provide a stepping stone into more advanced and better paid jobs or a trap for low skilled in low paid professions? (3) Does RUT stimulate immigrants to start their own firms or attain managerial positions?

Laborocto is a network collaboration between eight Forte-funded programs on work-life research. The network is aimed at long-run promotion of work-life research. Around 100 researchers at all career stages from more than 10 disciplines take part in the network.

The MapIneq project studies the trends and drivers of intergenerational, educational, labour market and health inequalities over the life course during the last decades.

The project offers insights into whether and how increasing income inequality spills over into disparities in future generations' educational outcomes. The evidence provided is instrumental to understanding the long-term challenges for the Swedish welfare state to provide equal opportunities for its citizens.

Economic inequality across the population implies vastly unequal opportunities in many dimensions that can impact an individual’s chance of entering the justice system. One such channel via which this can occur – even holding criminal behavior constant – is unequal treatment by agents of the justice system (e.g. police).

This project analyzes how distributional effects of de-carbonizing policies are moderated by redistributive social policies, and how this in turn affects the support of incumbent governments. The project generates new knowledge on how countries can develop socially sustainable de-carbonizing policies.

How are resources allocated to different vulnerable groups in need of social support? What are the principles and processes behind the allocation of municipal funds? This is a currently overlooked question, despite this being crucial for the allocation of resources to vulnerable groups with complex problems spanning different sectors.

In this project, individuals' life courses are studied, from birth to retirement, spanning from the 20th century onward in up to 28 European welfare states. The overarching aim is to analyze the impact of various welfare policy programs, such as child benefits, unemployment insurance, and sickness insurance, on individuals' health.

The overall aim of the project is to increase knowledge about the importance of social class relations for social cohesion and political divides in modern welfare states. A central focus is how social networks and existing political institutions together shape contemporary sociopolitical cleavages, from a country-comparative perspective.

Longitudinal and intergenerational effects of gendered segregation.

It is commonly perceived that migrants with higher professional qualifications integrate seamlessly into society. This interdisciplinary project aims to explore, with mixed methods, the knowledge gap on the topic of integration of high-skilled labor migrants.

In this project we study how student support and tuition fee systems in different countries are associated with student welfare, and whether this has consequences for higher education participation.

The project analyzes how information about names contributes to our understanding of social mobility over three centuries (1750–2020). Our main purpose is to study whether the surnames capture aspects of social background beyond traditional class indicators such as occupation.

SWECOV is the Swedish Register-based Research Project on COVID-19. SWECOV is a multidisciplinary research collaboration focused on using quantitative methods and comprehensive register data about the whole Swedish population to answer important questions about the consequences of the pandemic.

The consortium project “Tackling Inequalities in Time of Austerity” (TITA) provides a novel and comprehensive analysis of long-term trends in financial inequalities, inequalities in health and well-being and inequalities of opportunities over the life course, and their links to the moral and political climate in society.

Technological inequality – understanding the relation between recent technological innovations and social inequalities

In the last few years, it has become an established finding that immigrant-background youth tend to make more ambitious educational choices: At given achievement levels and with comparable socioeconomic status, children of immigrants are more likely to choose more demanding tracks.

Living conditions and life chances tend to run in families. Individuals’ health, attainment of education, and labor market careers largely depend on their parents. This project traces inequality back not only to parents, but grandparents, great grandparents and beyond by linking historical censuses from 1880 to 1950 to modern registers 1960s to 2020.

Challenges and opportunities in female-dominated occupations. This program aims to enhance our understanding of why women still fall behind men in terms of wages, careers, health and social recognition. What extent inequalities can be attributed to the fact that women tend to work in female dominated occupations and in “people-oriented jobs”?

This project explores precarious work in Sweden from the 1960s to the early 2020s, focusing on atypical contracts, job instability, and unemployment. It examines long-term trends vs. short-term fluctuations, and how they affect income, health, and differ by education, gender, immigrant status, and urbanity.

The project "Understanding health inequalities experienced by self-identified sexual minorities, same-sex partners, and their children", aims to broaden the knowledge about health inequalities experienced among those who identify themselves as belonging to a sexual minority and their children, as well as among those living in a same-sex relationship.

A dataset to study the causal effects of university education, exploiting a statistical technique called regression discontinuity. I study the returns to education (in terms of earnings and wealth), educational spillovers between siblings and across generations, and how university education can influence health and social preferences.

This project is part of an international consortium (WELRISCC) that aims to investigate from a comparative perspective how different European welfare states respond to challenges related to ensuring environmental sustainability while also enhancing people’s well-being.

In this project, we investigate how workplace segregation by gender in Sweden has developed during the last twenty years. We also study the interplay between occupational segregation by gender and workplace segregation by gender, and to what extent the workplace segregation by gender accounts for the gender gap in labor incomes.
