Magnus holds an MA in Theatre Studies (University of Copenhagen, 2004) and wrote his PhD thesis on the original production of Mozart’s Don Giovanni (Aarhus University, 2009). A co-founder of the Nordic Network for Early Opera, which brings together scholars and practitioners in order to promote 17th- and 18th-century opera, he has directed three operas in Copenhagen: Monteverdi’s “Orfeo” (Teatermuseet i Hofteatret, 2007), Monteverdi’s “L’incoronazione di Poppea” (Københavns Musikteater, 2011), and Cavalli’s “Gli amori d’Apollo e di Dafne” (Teatermuseet i Hofteatret, 2014).
Magnus’ research centres on the dramaturgy of Italian opera, in relation to the history of ideas as well as to the scenic and vocal performance practices, aesthetics and strategies of the past. He is currently working on a monograph with the title “A Life with the Seducer: Luigi Bassi and the Early Performance History of Mozart’s Don Giovanni” (forthcoming with the Hollitzer Wissenschaftsverlag, 2016). Ongoing projects include a monograph on Gian Francesco Busenello’s librettos as set by Cavalli and Monteverdi, and as produced in Venice in the mid-17th century, and a monograph on Ranieri de’ Calzabigi’s librettos as set by Gluck and other composers in the late 18th century.
