Seagrasses are marine flowering plants that form productive and diverse ecosystems (seagrass beds) in shallow coastal areas around the world. Consequently, they support productive fisheries for both fish and invertebrates, that support various benefits to humans (food, income, livelihoods, etc.).

We have recently started the Indo-Pacific Seagrass Network; a large-scale, collaborative research network doing systematic studies of seagrass ecosystems and associated fisheries across the Indo-Pacific.

We are now looking for interested students who want to do an MSc project with field work in the Indo-Pacific, on any of the following topics:

1) Linkages beween seagrasses and invertebrate fisheries (gleaning)

How do seagrass characteristics influence invertebrate assemblages and invertebrate fisheries? Ecological and interview-based surveys

2) The role of seagrass plant traits in small-scale fisheries

Seagrass traits (e.g. plant height, shoot density) influence fish assemblages, but if, and if so, how, are such biotic relationships utilized by small-scale fishers? Ecological field surveys, interviews

3) Seagrass restoration in the tropics; the role of intra- and inter-specific facilitation

Tropical seagrasses are declining in many parts of the world, and sometimes restoration is required to initiate recovery. Can principles of facilitation aid seagrass restoration?
