Workshop with the Network for the Study of Emotions

We are pleased to invite you to the third workshop of the Network for the Study of Emotions.

This autumn’s workshop will be modest in scope, but we are planning a more ambitious program for 2026.

Our funding from the Board of Human Science at Stockholm University has now ended, but this summer we received new support from Helge Ax:son Johnsons Stiftelse, which enables us to continue the network’s activities.

The third workshop will take the form of an afternoon text seminar with fika. We will discuss a chapter from Lisa Feldman Barrett’s How Emotions are Made: The Secret Life of the Brain (2017). Feldman Barrett, a very influential but also contested Canadian-American psychologist, has appeared several times in our discussions in the network as she challenges the notion of universal basic emotions, and instead proposes that emotions are socially constructed.

The seminar will take place in Villans bibliotek (the library of Musicology) at the Department for Culture and Aesthetics. Since this library is difficult to find, we will meet up in the main lobby of the department (Frescativägen 24E, entrance A, outside of the Auditorium) at 14:50.

After the seminar, we plan to have dinner together (at participants’ own expense). Venue and further details TBA.

To participate, please send an email to sara.ekstrom@idehist.su.se before 7 October 2025. This allows us to share reading material as well as plan for a sufficient amount of fika. Please mention any dietary restrictions, and also if you want to join the dinner.
