"Heritage language acquisition of Romance languages: a current debate.”

In this talk, we present research on the heritage language acquisition of two Romance languages, Spanish and Italian, specifically looking at the compatibility of results between these two languages and previous research. Heritage speakers are simultaneous or sequential bilinguals, usually speakers of a stronger, dominant, environment language and a weaker, family language. Two open questions in the literature that we address are (1) whether morphosyntactic competence of adult second generation heritage speakers is more like native or non-native speakers, and, if so, (2) to what degree.
