AIsthesis: New network for research on the aesthetics of AI imagery

The network which have recieved funding from the Danish Reserach Council 2025-2028 brings together Danish, Swedish and Norwegian humanist researchers with the aim of exploring how artificial intelligence (AI) changes contemporary image culture.

Anna Näslund, Professor of Art History at Stockholm University, is one of the members of the network.

All network participants, individually or in smaller groups, conduct research in the new, interdisciplinary field that studies the influence of AI technology on imagery (still and moving images). Their work is performed through the theoretical and analytical optics of aesthetics, i.e. focusing on the role of sensuous experience of forms in creating meaning, doubts, beliefs, etc. The purpose of the network is to support structured dialogue and explorative collaboration among researchers from different institutions to strengthen research-based insights and driving forward this emerging area of study.

The network will organise open seminars, workshops and PhD and master courses in 2025–2028. The project leader is Lotte Philipsen, Associate Professor of Art History, Aarhus University.

Anna Näslund is Professor of Art History at the Department of Culture and Aesthetics. She is interested in photography, pictorial culture, image archives, art historiography, and digitization. Her latest research project – Selling Pictures. Pictorial Economy and Commoditization 1820-2020 (funded by the Swedish Research Council 2025-2027) – provides a historical background to the contemporary discourse on mass production of images using AI technology.
