The Institute of European Law invites to a seminar on the topic "Closure of Borders in the Three Nordic EU Member States during the COVID-19 Pandemic"

With the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, disorder arose. On an unprecedented scale, Member States drastically applied different responses with respect to travel bans and limitations, border closures and controls, requirements of testing and quarantines, and so on; actions claimed to have been taken to possibly limit the spread of the virus, but presumably also implemented due to their symbolic nature. The three Nordic Member States clearly pursued the same kind of pattern of unilateral behaviour, introducing border related measures and, in fact, seemingly often to a much stronger degree compared with most other Member States.

Professor Ulla Neergaard, Copenhagen University, Associate professor Jaan Paju, Stockholm University and Professor Juha Raitio, Helsinki University discusses in this seminar the Nordic closure of borders during the pandemic out of a free movement of persons perspective. The seminar is based on their long read in EU Law Live, No 59, May 2021, Broken Wings: Closure of Borders in the Three Nordic EU Member States during the COVID-19 Pandemic.
