New Publication Sheds Light on Pay Transparency and Wage Equity

Professor Laura Carlson’s book project, Bridging the Gender Pay Gap through Transparency, has resulted in a new anthology. The book delves into the gender pay gap and how pay transparency legislation can promote wage fairness.

Transparency is a key to achieving pay equity.

The anthology Bridging the Gender Pay Gap through Transparency is the result of a collaborative book project that has been underway since 2022. This project was led by Professor Laura Carlson from the Department of Law at Stockholm University, in partnership with Dr. Sara Benedí Lahuerta from the Sutherland School of Law, University College Dublin (UCD), Ireland, and Katharina Miller, Former President of the European Women Lawyers Association and Former Head of the EU delegation of the G20/W20.

The book evaluates the advantages and challenges of adopting pay transparency legislation (PTL) as a means of addressing the persistent gender pay gap. With contributions from leading experts, it discusses the potential of PTL to reduce pay disparities and explores the key factors that can enhance the effectiveness of this legal intervention.

As Professor Carlson notes, transparency is a critical element in achieving pay equity, especially when addressing intersectional issues such as gender, ethnicity, class, and age. “This is particularly the case in Sweden, where the differences in wages between ethnic Swedish men and women are not as large as the difference between blue-collar women of color and ethnic Swedish men, which can be up to 40%,” Carlson explains.

An essential reference for legal academics and professionals

The anthology includes detailed case studies on how PTL is implemented globally and rigorously analyzes the 2023 EU Pay Transparency Directive. It also delves into the roles of Equality Bodies and private certification systems, providing both a comprehensive critique and an accessible examination of PTL’s potential and limitations.

The book is a valuable resource for legal scholars and practitioners specializing in gender equality and labor rights. It is also essential reading for students and researchers in gender studies, governance, and regulation, as well as policymakers and HR professionals.

Bridging the Gender Pay Gap through Transparency is now available from Edward Elgar Publishing.
