About the subject

Russian is one of the world’s largest languages. It is the native tongue of approximately 170 million people, but it is spoken by many more. Russia is also a great cultural nation with a vast number of writers, artists and composers who have had considerable influence all over the world, and continue to affect us today. Knowledge of the Russian language allows you to deepen your understanding of contemporary Russian society, and learn more about an intriguing country with a fascinating past.

Stockholm University offers courses in Russian starting at beginner’s level and extending to doctoral studies. After studying Russian for two semesters, you will have the skills sufficient to converse in everyday contexts, and be able to write and read with the help of a dictionary. You will also have gained an understanding of Russian classics and modern Russian literature in the original. Studies in Russian history, culture and society are continuous throughout the bachelor’s programme. In preparation for writing your bachelor’s thesis, you will also be introduced to linguistic and literary theories. In addition to our principal courses in Russian, we offer independent courses about Russia that do not require any knowledge of the language.

As a student of Russian, you will have the opportunity to study at the universities of Moscow and St. Petersburg through one of our exchange agreements. The department also provides students with the option of studying Russian in Russia by taking one of our summer courses taught at the University of Novgorod.

Professionals with a knowledge of Russian are sought after in the labour market. Our former students go on to work in the fields of mass media, commerce, diplomacy and government, and are in demand as teachers, translators and interpreters.
