Language Education

About the subject

Language education is about learning and teaching language. If you are interested in languages and language teaching, taking a course in language education can be very rewarding. If you are working as a teacher you can gain additional qualifications, and we also have a PhD program in language education.

When you study language education you learn about the role of language from pre-school to adult education. You can choose between courses in language and literature education in Swedish, Swedish as a second language, English or modern languages.

Practicing teachers can obtain qualifications in Swedish or English for young learners. In the first-cycle courses you learn how to assess language competence and you will also develop awareness about second language and multilingual issues in your teaching. You can learn more about literacy development and about children's literature that you can use in school. There are also courses on language and text focusing on multimodality and the use of digital tools. We offer courses in language education for English teachers.

Language teachers can take our second-cycle courses and learn about current research. There are also courses in systemic functional linguistics, language assessment theories, as well as on theories and methods in language education.

Career opportunities

Courses in language education are primarily intended for practicing teachers who need additional qualifications or who want to deepen their knowledge. But other educators in the public sector or the education sector will benefit from learning more about language education.

If you would like to do research you can supplement your previous studies and get a Bachelor or a Master degree in language education, which will qualify you to apply to our PhD program.
