Josephine from Germany about her time at Stockholm University

Josephine, from Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, studied at the Department of Psychology during the fall semester of 2023. Read more about her experience!

Courses taken at the Department of Psychology: Psychophysiology: relationships between psychological and physiological processes and Neuropsychological methods. All master level courses.

Why did you choose Stockholm University as your exchange study destination?

– Primarily because it is a cooperation partner of my home university and offers neuroscientific/neuropsychological courses in English. As I am very interested in neuroscience and wanted to study in English, this was the best option for me. I was also interested in studying in Stockholm and getting to know the Swedish culture.

How was your arrival to Stockholm and where did you live during the semester?

– I did not use the pick-up service. However, I think I it is a very nice service for new students! As there is only one orientation day, just right before the start of the semester, I had already met most of the people and gotten most of the information.

– Most of the welcome activities took place during the first few weeks of university and were sometimes scheduled at times when I had classes. So, I was not able to attend. Therefore, I would have preferred an orientation week or at least some orientation days a week before the official start of the semester. However, I also understand that it is more convenient for most students not to arrive a week earlier.

 – I was not able to find accommodation through the Stockholm University housing office, so I had to look on the public housing market. The website of Stockholm University recommended Akademisk kvart, where I quickly and easily found a very good shared apartment.

What did you think about the quality of the courses?

– I really enjoyed the course in Psychophysiology and gained a lot of new knowledge and perspectives, especially through the opportunity to discuss and reflect on papers with different scientists doing research in this area. As for my other course at the department, in Neuropsychological methods, it is provided as a literature course. I missed the critical reflection and discussion, as well as the communication with the professor a bit here and would have wished for a little more supervision.

– I also took courses in Swedish, which was nice and helpful!

What is your overall impression of your exchange semester at the Department of Psychology and Stockholm University?

– I had a very great time at Stockholm University and learned a lot about studying in Sweden, my psychology and myself! Stockholm University offers many helpful services and you never feel alone or lost. There is always someone you can ask for help. The university has a great campus with many different study and discussion areas (especially in Albano). The teaching is much more personal and in smaller groups than at my home university.
