This thesis explores vocational teachers’ competence through their own and the school principals’ perceptions. It is compiled by three studies, a conceptual method analysis of professional competence concept, a questionnaire study and an interview study. Findings, analysed through Communities of Practice and Ellström´s competence model, show that teaching competence has a high use value due to its relevance with the vocational teachers’ work. However, it has low exchange value as it is not formally required for teachers’ employment. Conversely, occupational competence has high exchange value, as it is required for recruitment.
Yrkeslärare har en nyckelroll i samhället för att förbereda framtidens arbetskraft för arbetsmarknaden. Vilka kompetenser har de och vilka kompetenser tycker de är viktiga? Med en relativt stor andel obehöriga yrkeslärare är Sverige särskilt intressant för forskarna att studera i sammanhanget.
Vocational education and training (VET) - som på svenska blir Yrkeskunnande och lärande (YL) - är ett väletablerat internationellt forskningsområde som idag uppmärksammas på flera plan i relation till frågor om yrkeskunnande, kvalifikationer och kompetenser.
