Centre for Health Equity Studies (CHESS) was created in 2000 jointly by Stockholm University and Karolinska Institutet, with financial support from the Swedish Council for Working Life and Social Research (FAS).

The Centre for Social Research on Alcohol and Drugs (SoRAD) was established in 1999, following a Government Report and with the aim to strengthen social alcohol and drug research. SoRAD is an interdisciplinary research centre which initiates and conducts social scientific research in the field of alcohol, drugs, tobacco and gambling.
