Abstract
This seminar will focus on how the material turn, as a set of theoretical approaches to early modern literature and culture, offers significant methodological tools to the researcher working in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic. Theories in Affect Studies and New Materialism, for example, demand work in the history of science and medicine that highlight important parallels between early modernity and the present. I will take the example of author Michel de Montaigne, to look more closely at how Affect Studies and New Materialism, when studied with careful attention to history and to the dangers of anachronism, may help scholars not only unearth new knowledge about early modernity and its resonances with current times, but give scholars methodological foundations for conducting early modern research differently.
