Martina Vitackova (Ghent University): Feminist rewriting as a strategy and practice

Rewriting a narrative from a woman’s point of view is a century-old practice that, sadly enough, often stays in the margins of scholarly attention. Nevertheless, it is a useful tool to help us understand the underlying gendered power dynamics of a text, and within the text.

The lecture sums up the existing scholarship on feminist/women’s rewriting, placing it theoretically within the context of feminism and literary theory. Using examples from literature but also popular culture, I discuss the common characteristics of intertextuality, postcolonial and feminist rewriting, and make a plea to include feminist rewriting in the literary-analytical toolbox, and feminist rewritings into our syllabi.
