Latin America is in flux. New movements and ideas are gaining ground; patterns of trade are altered; poverty decreases; and deep changes are taken place in terms of gender, ethnic identities, religion and other social issues. Progress notwithstanding, several of the countries on the continent continue to be marked by the inequality and instability that have plagued their pasts. With falling commodity prices, the continent’s model of development is once again under discussion.

The Master Programme in Latin American Studies at Stockholm University gives you a wide orientation regarding the questions and challenges that the continent faces as well as the tools to address them. The programme is designed to provide participants with a solid foundation for future work with Latin America in areas such as public administration, academic research, international organizations, development co-operation and journalism.

The programme offers a combination of compulsory and individually chosen courses that together cover a diverse set of areas within the field of social science research on Latin America, around issues such as: human rights, gender and inequalities, indigenous and ethnic movements, sustainable development, regional integration and political systems. The programme is intended to provide an interdisciplinary understanding of the main developments in Latin America, applying scientific methods related to social sciences and area studies.

Students have the opportunity of spending a semester at a foreign university and/or doing fieldwork/internship in Latin America. The programme ends with an independent research project of 30 credits which provides opportunities for both thematic and regional specialization. Moreover, the students will also be able to participate on our Erasmus exchange programmes, with our partners from different European Universities.

Students from our course work in a wide range of careers, both within and outside of Latin America, in the public and private sectors
