Studies in Curating Art

Studies in Curating Art was founded in 2014 to explore curatorial research and the connection between curatorial theory and practice.

Edited around a selected theme, the series has typically provided an opportunity for students in the MA programme to work with publishing as a curatorial tool. It moreover acts as a platform for faculty research into the curatorial.

Studies in Curating Art VIII

Anatomy of a Cowboy explores an archetype through postmortem and undressing. Each chapter picks through the cowboy, his bones, and attributes. We are building an image for and with artists while asking: “Why the cowboy? Why now? Why us?” Our postmortem also reveals the foundational innards of the cowboy’s sordid history. Violence is inherent to this character and the brutish things it represents. Through butchering the iconic effigy, along with its trappings, we collectively envision what would happen if the lone rider was stripped bare and captured by the arts. We’ve splayed him out nicely between these pages. We’re looking for something beneath all the bells and whistles, shrewdly stealing pieces from his being. Still suckers for the cinematic, we couldn’t help but scatter appropriations of some of the cowboy’s most enduring attributes. Hints of weather-beaten leather or loops of lasso parade through the texts and design. A dust cover serves to protect from a harsh reality and only just mutes flecks of pearl and steel. The material cowboy is reflected here.

Translation is a careful process of carrying across the fullness of a spoken, written, signed, hummed or visualised message. Unavoidably, things will get lost, or spilled, along the way. In this publication, edited by three students in the International MA in Curating Art at Stockholm University, eleven artists address the act of translating across both human and non-human communication, thereby creating new universes in which to exist.

“We have approached translation in terms of expansion, extraction and presence – as a profoundly intimate, embodied phenomenon and something that we do constantly in order to understand the contexts and landscapes in which we live. We have investigated its leaky qualities, its elements of surprise and its possibilities for both displays of power, oppression and refuge. In an era of increasing polarisations, shifting identity politics and climate breakdown, we are constantly redefining our relationships to ourselves, each other and our environment, making translation in this expanded perspective particularly urgent.”

In Spring 2021, Ghostbusters-Anti-Racist Working Group has reached out to groups in Stockholm who share and work towards anti-racist practices. Contained in this publication is an edited transcript of a roundtable conversation between Ghostbusters-ARWG, Brown Island, branching out from Konstfack University of Arts, Crafts and Design, and SKH Brown Island, based at Stockholm University of the Arts.

“Flowing from personal experiences, we are firstly able to collectively explore how whiteness’ strategies for self-preservation largely yield the same reactions regardless of where it is challenged. This also works to reflect on how whiteness moves through institutions, particularly of learning. Secondly, the making of this publication served as a moment of solidarity-making, where learning across our differences was possible. We attended to the question of how we may be there for each other as we go about this work in our respective environments."

Studies in Curating Art V

The cover of Oracular Visions

In times of uncertainty, contemporary oracles can provide the answers to our questions. Students on the International MA in Curating Art at Stockholm University, who edited this book, have been investigating the entanglement between commissioning as a curatorial practice and the task of formulating and posing crucial questions. “Amidst this multiplicity of truths, and all the places and possibilities that a future could lead us to, perhaps what we are seeking is guidance and ways to navigate through what will come. Thus, we approached artists, art critics and curators, and asked them to provide their own oracular visions.”

Studies in Curating Art III

Cover of the book Caress. A Candid Approach.

Caress: A Candid Approach is a collection of thoughts, shaped by the notion of care and care taking edited by students on the International MA in Curating Art at Stockholm University. A starting point for this publication is the realization that care is an intrinsic part of the practice of curators, educators, organizers and artists. In the process of articulation, the editors captured the notion of care by engaging in conversations, gathering different approaches, ideas and practices – a caress, only a fraction of what is essentially beyond measure.
